“Oreo” Cake — a chocolate cake for special occasions
A black-and-white cake with a recognizable flavor: chocolate sponge cake, delicate cream cheese frosting, and crushed cookies between the layers. It has a simple, sleek look, making it equally suitable for a children’s party or an adult gathering.
How Does It Taste?
The cocoa sponge cake is rich but not bitter. The cream made with cream cheese and sour cream adds that slightly salty, creamy note that makes chocolate desserts more interesting. The cookies inside soften slightly and add texture. On top is a mirror glaze, which gives the cake a glossy appearance when sliced.
What occasions is it suitable for
It’s a popular choice for teenagers’ and adults’ birthdays, graduation parties, corporate events and parties, and New Year’s celebrations. It’s a great option when you want a chocolate cake that isn’t too heavy: the cream cheese filling makes it much lighter than classic butter-based chocolate cakes.
Weight and Servings
A whole cake weighs 1.4 kg and yields 12 servings, each weighing approximately 120 g. It’s designed to serve a group of up to twelve guests.

The story of the cookie that inspired the cake’s flavor
The cake is based on the flavor of the world’s most famous sandwich cookie, which first appeared in New York in 1912: two dark chocolate discs with white cream in between. It was produced by the National Biscuit Company—the same company that later became known as Nabisco.
Where Did the Name Come From?
There is still no definitive explanation, and the company has never provided one. There are various theories: from a Greek word meaning “mountain” to the French “or” — “gold” — because the first packages were golden in color. There’s also a very prosaic guess: the short word is simply easy to pronounce and print on the cookie mold.
A Copy That Outlived the Original
Interestingly, in 1912, this cookie was not the original: four years earlier, competitors had released the nearly identical Hydrox. But it was the later product that survived and became a global phenomenon, while Hydrox gradually disappeared from store shelves—a rare case where a copy completely supplanted the original idea.
How It Ended Up in Cakes
The combination of chocolate sponge cake with cream cheese frosting comes from the American tradition of cheesecakes and “cookies and cream”—a flavor that first appeared in ice cream and only later made its way into cakes. Our cake is made exactly according to this concept: chocolate, cream cheese, and crunchy cookies between the layers.
